Influential Tuesday Group likely to back Paul Ryan for House Speaker
Rep Charlie Dent tells DecodeDC “there is very strong and overwhelming support for Paul Ryan within the Tuesday Group and also the Republican mainstream members.”
Update 10/22/15 1:40 PM EST : The Tuesday group formally backed Ryan Thursday afternoon. In a statement, Ryan said, “I appreciate the support of the Tuesday Group. This is one more step toward building a united, Republican team.”
Rep. Paul Ryan has likely won endorsement from two of three groups he deemed essential to run for Speaker of the House.
In an exclusive interview with DecodeDC, Rep Charlie Dent (R-Pa), a co-chair of the Tuesday Group, said “there is very strong and overwhelming support for Paul Ryan within the Tuesday Group and also the Republican mainstream members.”
Dent, a self-described “center-right” Republican, leads the Tuesday Group, an informal group of moderate Republicans in the House. He told DecodeDC his group will release a formal statement regarding their endorsement for Speaker sometime today.
Ryan, the presumptive favorite to replace outgoing Speaker John Boehner, had previously stated he would only consider a run for the Speakership if the fractured Republican Party could unite behind him. Ryan is seeking a show of support from three groups: the Freedom Caucus, the Tuesday Group, and the Republican Study Committee.
Wednesday evening, a majority of the House Freedom Caucus, some of the most conservative members in Congress, voted to back Rep. Ryan for Speaker. Ryan met with the Republican Study Committee Wednesday morning, and gave all three groups a Friday deadline for their decisions on whether or not to back him.
House Republicans are expected to accept nomination for speaker next Wednesday and vote on Thursday.
